Dr. Sirisha Reddy performs 1st PFA at Cape Fear Valley in January 2025.
PFA is used to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib), the most common type of arrhythmia. AFib causes the heart to beat irregularly, which can reduce blood flow and increase the risk of stroke and heart failure. PFA is an alternative to traditional catheter ablation methods, which use radiofrequency or cryothermal energy to create lesions in the heart. PFA offers several advantages over traditional methods, including:
- Reduced risk of complications
- PFA has a lower risk of damaging the esophagus and nerves than traditional methods.
- Shorter procedure time
- A typical PFA procedure takes 30–60 minutes, while radiofrequency and cryoablation can take one to three hours.
- Faster recovery
- PFA patients experience a faster recovery time than those treated with traditional methods.
